Police are not obligated to protect you

Most of us grew up believing that the police are there to help and protect us. As an adult, it is often a shock to find out that it is not quite true. The police are not obligated to protect you; YOU are your first defense against anyone with criminal or malicious intent! While there are certainly a lot of police who will protect citizens, they are not legally obligated to do so. This means that, essentially, they are good people doing a good thing without the law requiring them to; but it also means that they do not have to.

Any matters that should involve the police, call them. Just remember that when seconds count, the police are only minutes (or in some cases, hours!) away… and the only thing between you and the rapist / mugger / killer is whatever tool you choose to defend yourself with – such as a firearm.

The court stated that official police personnel and the government employing them owe no duty to victims of criminal acts and thus are not liable for a failure to provide adequate police protection unless a special relationship exists.
